This unit states
about lexis
which refers to an individual word or units of vocabulary that have meaning.
These meanings could be: figurative, denotative, context. Figurative
meaning is about imagination. Denotative meaning is literal. Context meaning that comes from
vocabulary items such as: prefixes, suffixes or compounds (nouns made from 2 or
more separated words). Other important aspects in this unit are: Fixed expressions that cannot be
changed. Idioms,
its meaning depends on context. Chunks are units usually learned as one piece. Collocations
are words that go together. According to Carter (1998), says that collocations
are words that happened repeatedly. However, as lexis is units of vocabulary,
it’s necessary to know many vocabulary words in order to express or thoughts
otherwise we won’t be able to say what we mean through the use of language;
because language is lexis, Wilkins (1972). All in all, I would apply vocabulary
activities with suitable worksheets and online funny games, in BrtishCounsil,
which make help learners increase their lexis knowledge.
